Egg nog or hot chocolate?
Neither. Hot apple cider. It’s a complicated crockpot recipe handed down in my family for generations. Apple juice and cinnamon sticks on low. We usually make it before we go to bed on Christmas Eve so it’s ready when the kids wake up.
Does Santa wrap presents or set them under the tree? He wraps the gifts. However, if the children receive over-sized items (e.g. big wheel, picnic table) they are set next to the tree.
Colored lights on tree or white?
White. No debate.
When do you put your decorations up?
Usually the weekend immediately following Thanksgiving. (Three years ago when I was pregnant with Clayton, our tree got decorated on Christmas Eve Eve. It was really difficult, but I got it done in between naps and throwing up!)
What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? Hashbrown Casserole and BISCUITS. No carbs count on Christmas Day.
Favorite holiday memory as a child: My grandparents came to our house every Christmas morning just to see what Santa brought my brother and me. They would eat breakfast and stay most of the day, playing with our games and toys.
When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?
I was in the third grade and one of my classmates parents came in to read “Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus”. I had never even considered that there might not be one.
Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?
No.
How do you decorate your Christmas tree?
All at once, preferably when the children are napping or otherwise MIA.
Snow! Love it or dread it?
I’m from the South. We barely got a dusting once a year. After we moved to Copenhagen, It snowed on Christmas Eve our first year there. It was amazing. I’m totally a snow CONVERT. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!
Can you ice skate? Yes. One of my many hidden talents. Mind you, I'm no Tanya Harding.
Do you remember your favorite gift?
My hubby always tries so hard to get me something I"ll love. My favorite gift of all time, although not a Christmas gift, was a necklace with three floating hearts, one to symbolize each of our children.
What's the most important thing about the holidays for you?
Creating traditions and memories for my children. I want them to grow up with a strong sense of what Christmas means to them.
What is your favorite holiday dessert? Are you kidding? Pecan Pie.
What is your favorite tradition?
Once the grandchildren got older, we played “Dirty Santa” with my extended family, aunts, uncles and grandparents. I will never forget my grandfather shuffling over to grab a “Clapper” out of my hands.
Which do you prefer, giving or receiving? Giving. I truly enjoy finding what I think may be the “perfect” gift for someone.
What is your favorite Christmas Song?
"Who Would Imagine A King" by Whitney Houston. It’s not very well known, but it’s an incredible song. I am also partial to “Christmas in Dixie,” but for not-so-obvious reasons. My husband proposed on December 18 and we went out to celebrate. It was the first song we danced to as an “engaged couple.”
Candy canes! Yuck or yum?
Yuck. I am not a mint girl, whatsoever.
Ever recycled a Christmas present? Yes. Usually it’s FROM someone who didn’t know me very well and being recycled TO someone whom I don’t know very well.
