Grits.

Hubby was home sick today.  He caught an awful bug and barely made it home from the City last night before getting very ill. In fifteen years I can recall seeing my husband sick FOUR times and one of those times he had an acute appendicitis. He is NOT a good patient. Needless to say, my original game plan for today was significantly altered.

The only home remedy in my cooking arsenal is grits.  They cure what ails you.  I ate nothing but grits for the entire first 20 weeks of my third pregnancy. A lot of salt, a little butter, little pepper, little cheese.  MMM, MMM good.   I told the kids we were having grits for dinner tonight and they were absolutely thrilled.  You would've thought Santa was coming to dinner.

When we were in Copenhagen my dad would mail us grits along with other essentials [Jiffy cornbread mix, marshmallows, you name it].  The first time I cooked grits for the kids once we were settled in California, Barrett asked whether "Papa" had mailed them to us.  I had to explain now that we were in California, we could buy our own grits.  Thank goodness Safeway carries them.

My home remedy for hubby seems to be working.  It has to.  I need him back at work tomorrow so I can get some things done around here.

I hope he feels better. I've never tried grits before...but I'm wondering if you felt the same way about grits (while pregnant) as I am about mashed potatoes these days.

Grits are the best. EVER. Several years ago, pre-Katrina, I took a trip to New Orelans with several girl friends and discovered the true goodness of this dish.

Your post brought back many found memories for me of great food, music, and girl time.

Thank you.
